Siete arrivati a piedi da Belgirate? Complimenti, avete percorso 8 km e meritate il giusto riposo! Prendetevi qualche minuto qui, nella quiete di questo luogo fuori dal trambusto del centro di Stresa.
Se invece avete già visitato le bellezze del Golfo Borromeo e volete iniziare una bella passeggiata verso Belgirate, fra boschi e antiche chiesette, ricaricate le forze ai piedi di questo monumento dedicato all’amicizia tra Antonio Rosmini (1797-1855) e Alessandro Manzoni (1785-1873).
La sua costruzione avviene nel 1932 proprio nel luogo in cui termina lo storico sentiero dei Castagni, che collega Lesa-Belgirate e Stresa passando a mezza costa della montagna in uno scenario incantevole. (Cartelli “Sentiero dei Castagni” e “Sentiero L2 Stresa-Belgirate”, segnale bianco/rosso).
Chissà quante volte il Manzoni e l’Abate Rosmini si sono dati appuntamento proprio qui, come noi oggi diamo appuntamento ad un amico davanti a un bar sul lungolago.
Il Crocifisso e lo splendido bassorilievo, con i profili dei due amici, sono opera dello scultore Pietro Canonica (1869-1959). La scritta sottostante li indica come «duplice vertice sublime di unica fiamma» (A. Fogazzaro). L’iscrizione latina scolpita sul muro tradotta dice: « Qui vivono uomini che sopravvivono a se stessi. Qui sono interrogati e anche tacendo parlano».
Rosmini e Manzoni si incontrarono la prima volta nel 1826, già reciprocamente noti per le opere pubblicate; da allora si frequentarono a Milano e a Stresa, dove Rosmini viveva, mentre Manzoni dal 1839 trascorreva le vacanze presso la vicina Lesa, nella Villa Stampa appartenente alla seconda moglie. Manzoni amava fare lunghe passeggiate e chissà quante volte, armato di bastone da passeggio e di buone scarpe comode, ha percorso a piedi tutto il sentiero per raggiungere il suo amico Rosmini. Un’amicizia sincera e profonda durata nel tempo fino alla morte del filosofo religioso nel 1855, la cui tomba si trova nella bella chiesa del sovrastante Collegio Rosmini. Molte volte questo tratto di strada è stato percorso insieme dai due illustri amici per salire a visitare i lavori della chiesa allora in costruzione o incontrare i novizi dell’istituto religioso fondato da Rosmini.
Se salite la strada arriverete infatti alla Chiesa del SS. Crocifisso, presso il Collegio Rosmini, da dove si può ammirare un panorama incantevole. All’interno della chiesa è possibile sostare innanzi al monumento dedicato a Antonio Rosmini, opera dello scultore ticinese Vincenzo Vela (1820-1891). Potrete inoltre scendere nella cripta dove riposano le spoglie mortali del filosofo.

STRESA, MONUMENT TO ROSMINI-MANZONI FRIENDSHIP
Did you walk from Belgirate? Congratulations, you have traveled 8 km and deserve a rest! Take a few minutes here, in the quiet of this place away from the hustle and bustle of the centre of Stresa.
If, on the other hand, you have already visited the beauties of the Borromean Gulf and want to start a nice walk towards Belgirate, among woods and ancient churches, recharge your energies at the foot of this monument dedicated to the friendship between Antonio Rosmini (1797-1855) and Alessandro Manzoni ( 1785-1873).
Its construction took place in 1932 right where the historic Castagni path ends, it connects Lesa-Belgirate to Stresa passing halfway up the mountain in an enchanting setting. (“Sentiero dei Castagni” and “Sentiero L2 Stresa-Belgirate” signs, white/red sign).
Who knows how many times Manzoni and Abbot Rosmini have met right here, just like we meet a friend today in front of a bar by the lakefront.
The Crucifix and the splendid bas-relief, with the profiles of the two friends, are by the sculptor Pietro Canonica (1869-1959). The inscription below indicates them as «double sublime summit of a single flame» (A. Fogazzaro). The translated Latin inscription carved on the wall reads: “Here live men who survive themselves. Here they are questioned and they also speak in silence”.
Rosmini and Manzoni met for the first time in 1826, they would meet in Milan and Stresa, where Rosmini lived, while from 1839 Manzoni spent his holidays at nearby Lesa, in the Villa Stampa belonging to his second wife. Manzoni loved to take long walks and who knows how many times, armed with a walking stick and good comfortable shoes, he walked the entire path to reach his friend Rosmini. A sincere and profound friendship that lasted over time until the death of the religious philosopher in 1855, whose tomb is located in the beautiful church of the Rosmini College above. Many times this stretch of road was traveled together by the two illustrious friends to go up to visit the works of the church, at the time under construction or to meet the novices of the religious institute founded by Rosmini.
If you go up the road you will in fact arrive at the Church of SS. Crocifisso, at the Rosmini College, from where you can admire an incredible view. Inside the church it is possible to stop in front of the monument dedicated to Antonio Rosmini, the work of the Ticino sculptor Vincenzo Vela (1820-1891). You can also go down to the crypt where the mortal remains of the philosopher rest.
