Sulla curva che da Lesa avvia verso Meina, lungo il muraglione della chiesa parrocchiale, è posizionata una targa che testimonia la presenza di Carcano nel piccolo borgo lesiano. L’abitazione del grande traduttore di Shakespeare sorgeva proprio qui, “all’ombra del feroce campanile”, come scrisse Carcano. Oggi la casa è una proprietà privata e non è visitabile.
La chiesa di San Martino, che vedete davanti a voi, ospita alcuni dipinti opera della famiglia Carcano, composta, oltre che da Giulio, dalla moglie Giulia e dalla figlia Maria. Nella chiesa c’è ancora il banco originale in cui Alessandro Manzoni era solito pregare. Entrate a visitare la chiesa se volete e cercate la targa sul banco. Se alzate la testa per ammirare l’affresco poi, potrete riconoscere il viso dello scrittore tra le persone raffigurate.
La chiesa comunque sia è accogliente e sicuramente merita uno sguardo più attento. Anche da qui, come dalle altre Chiese che incontrerete, una volta partivano le “rogazioni”, termine popolare in uso all’epoca per definire queste particolari processioni del mese di maggio.
In realtà, il termine deriva dal latino rogare che significa pregare. Erano antiche tradizioni di origine pagana poi convertite al Cristianesimo nelle quali si invocava Dio affinché proteggesse le campagne, i raccolti ed il bestiame.
Ma torniamo a noi.
Alla morte di Carcano la famiglia fece stampare l’edizione completa delle sue opere, oggi conservata presso la sala manzoniana a Villa Stampa, poco distante da qui in direzione Stresa. La famiglia donò inoltre al comune la biblioteca, lo studio e parecchi documenti del traduttore, con il fine di perpetuarne la memoria, tutti conservati nel Museo Manzoniano. A Giulio Carcano è intitolata la biblioteca civica di Lesa.
Giulio Carcano è sepolto nel cimitero di Lesa, come lo fu per un periodo la Teresa Borri Stampa, seconda moglie di Manzoni, che qui riposava accanto al primo marito, il conte Decio Stampa.

CHURCH OF SAN MARTINO AND GIULIO CARCANO’S HOUSE
On the curb which leads from Lesa towards Meina, along the wall of the parish church, there is a plaque which bears witness to the presence of Carcano in the small town of Lesa. The home of Shakespeare’s great translator stood right here, “in the shadow of the ferocious bell tower”, as Carcano wrote. Today the house is privately owned and cannot be visited.
The church of San Martino, which you see in front of you, houses some paintings by the Carcano family, made not only by Giulio, but also by his wife Giulia and daughter Maria. In the church there is still the original bench where Alessandro Manzoni used to pray. Enter to visit the church if you want and look for the plaque on the bench. If you raise your head to admire the fresco you will be able to recognize the writer’s face.
The church however is welcoming and certainly deserves a closer look.
But let’s get back on track.
Upon Carcano’s death, the family had the complete edition of his works printed, now kept in the Manzoni room at Villa Stampa, not far from here towards Stresa. The family also donated the translator’s library, study and several documents to the municipality, with the aim of perpetuating his memory, all kept in the Manzoni Museum. The civic library of Lesa is named after Giulio Carcano.
Giulio Carcano is buried in the Lesa cemetery, as was for a time Teresa Borri Stampa, Manzoni’s second wife, who rested here next to her first husband, Count Decio Stampa.
